expanding vocabulary through structured immersion

how does vocabulary retention actually work?
Words stick when you encounter them repeatedly in different contexts. Reading the same word in five different sentences creates stronger neural pathways than memorising a definition once.
Our lectures present new vocabulary within layered examples. You hear a word, see it used in a sentence, then encounter it again in a different scenario minutes later. This spacing builds recognition without forced repetition.
what makes a word memorable?
Concrete words with strong imagery stick faster than abstract concepts. "Crimson" is easier to remember than "tendency" because your brain can picture it immediately.
We prioritise high-frequency vocabulary that appears across multiple domains. Learning "essential" serves you better than memorising "perspicacious" unless your field specifically requires it.
Each lecture introduces 12 to 18 new terms. This range allows meaningful exposure without overwhelming your working memory. Words are grouped by semantic field so associations form naturally.
who teaches these lectures?
Isla Thornbury spent eight years teaching academic English at university level before joining Aculem in 2016. She designs lectures around corpus data, focusing on words that appear frequently in both spoken and written English.
Neve Caulfield worked as a lexicographer before transitioning to education. Her lectures emphasise etymology and word families, showing how understanding roots helps you decode unfamiliar terms.
Saffron Blackwell specialises in vocabulary for professional contexts. Her background in business communication means lectures include terminology relevant to workplace scenarios and formal correspondence.
